How to Use Robots < META > Tag

April 1st, 2009

If you don’t want some of your pages indexed by google or any other search engine you can use the html <META> tag, it basically tells search bots not to index the content of a web page, it can also tell search bots not to scan the page for links to follow.

The meta tag robots goes inside the <head> tag as shows the example bellow.

<html>

<head>

<title>…</title>

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW”>

<meta name=”description” content=”" />

</head>

While using robots meta <tag> you should know:

  • robots can be bad and ignore your <META> tag. Especially malware robots that scan the web for security holes and spam robots that harvest email addresses to be used by spammers.
  • the NOFOLLOW only applies to links on the applied page.
  • The NOFOLLOW from robots <meta> tag is not the same as the rel=”nofollow” link attribute.

Valid Values:

NAME=” ROBOTS”.

The “CONTENT” attribute are: “INDEX”, “NOINDEX”, “FOLLOW”, “NOFOLLOW”. All attributes must be separated by commas.

Possible combinations :

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”NOINDEX, FOLLOW”>

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”INDEX, NOFOLLOW”>

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”INDEX, FOLLOW”>

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW”>

Other attributes can also be added to Robots meta tags, to know more about it please take a look at the post Using Noodp and Noydir

Page Rank in SEO

March 20th, 2009

Lots of people are obsessed with the Page Rank of their websites, but Page Rank is not really that important anymore even if it used to be of great value in the past.

At first Page Rank was supposed to show the popularity of web pages based on the number of links pointing to them and the quality of those links, scaled from one to ten this method was useful to find the quality of a site or web page and  their links juice. But today Page Rank has become inaccurate and most of the time out of date by a month or more, done in purpose to confuse people trying to decipher the Google system or just left behind by Google engineers, who knows really but only Google itself!, in either case the result is the same misleading effect on the people that base their online presence only on it .

Page Rank no longer important, it is advised for the reader to not fall obsessed on getting higher Page Ranks, disregard Page Rank and concentrate instead on the promotion of your sites.
